In this one day beginners workshop we will practice and learn the foundational hand, which was devised by master penman and typographer Edward Johnston, in early 20th century England. Johnston based this broad‐edge pen hand on 10th century carolingian manuscript calligraphy. The foundational hand is an upright alphabet with a 30 degree pen angle. According to English‐American master scribe Sheila Waters (b.1929) the foundational hand should be the first alphabet students’ study.
