For a long time I have been looking for calligraphy classes in Berlin.
Last year italian calligrapher and type designer Giuseppe Salerno gave a few, very refreshing workshops on Copperplate and brush pen styles. That has been a bless and all of a sudden it made clear that calligraphy classes could be very fun, challenging, but also so much rewarding.
Calligraphy is a discipline that demands constant practice; the good thing about this is that everyone can improve if he sticks to it. But outside schools and universities it is quite a feat to find professional courses.
With MAKE! Skilled Hands we are trying to fill this gap, refusing the assumption that learning time is over and that there is no place anymore for discovery and confrontation once in the professional world. Of course it is always possible to practice on your own, but learning through different “hands” from different teachers, in a group where each one can bring a different background and share his experiences is incomparable. Besides, alone you can develop bad practices and repeat them forever if nobody is there to show you the tricks. I speak from experience...
We hope to be able in the future to develop a yearly program, a reference to look at to discover and deepen handcraft skills. But let’s begin first and see if others share this view and need with us.
We are very much looking forward to our first calligraphy workshop in January, on the study of Spencerian script with pointed-pen specialist Barbara Calzolari from Italy. She teaches classes all over the world, she is very well prepared with teaching material and with great dedication to her students. Two and an half days with her will bring us all very far!
The workshop is planned for January, but we need registrations now in order to solve any logistical aspect in time and with no extra costs. Please do not delay and help us to spread the word!
Everyone is welcome.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the workshop.
